Calligraphy lessons. Dance classes. Mid-autumn festival celebrations. Lion dances. New Year celebrations. Language lessons. Culture studies. Ancient dynasties. These are all things students who study at the Confucius Institute learn and experience at the weekly classes held on the campuses of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and Omaha. Class flyers for Lincoln and Omaha can be downloaded.
Since the UNL Confucius Institute started the classes of Chinese Language and Culture in 2008, it has benefited many students, adults as well as children, with learning experiences. Students have learned to communicate in Chinese, even to the extent of participating in a national Chinese Speech Competition. But they do not learn simply how to speak Chinese. They also learn the significance of various Chinese festivals and how the American and Chinese cultures can work together to enhance lives of people in both countries.Adult classes are $90 and range from Beginning Chinese I to Advanced Chinese III. Children’s language classes are only $50 and range from Beginning Chinese I to Chinese Poems & Composition V. Children can also take dance or singing classes for $50. Adults and children alike can take classes on calligraphy and painting for only $50. All classes are held weekly for 12 weeks and have enjoyed positive feedback from students. Teachers not only offer language, dance and calligraphy lessons in these sessions but also offer insight on significant Chinese culture festivals, Chinese history, and Chinese way of life.
