2010 Winter Bridge Program in China

Winter Bridge Group

Confucius Institute at UNL sent 10 Nebraska public school educators to China to participate in the 2010 Winter Bridge Program. The program is designed to help teachers establish cultural connections and expand bilingual curriculum to include Chinese language in Nebraska public schools.

The trip, which lasted 8 days December 2-10, 2010, was sponsored through a Chinese Bridge fund from Hanban, a branch of the Chinese Ministry of Education. Nebraska educators participating are from Lincoln, North Platte and Scottsbluff.

UNL Confucius Institute lead a group of 11 Nebraska educational administrators on a Chinese language and culture tour in China. This tour was sponsored by a Chinese Bridge Fund from Hanban (The Office of Chinese Language Council International), a branch of Chinese Ministry of Education; Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), and UNL Confucius Institute. Participants visited schools and cultural sites in Xi'an and Beijing; engaged in discussions with officials, principals and school teachers and attended seminars in Chinese language, history and culture. Members of the group included: John Gale, Secretary of State; Roger Breed, Commissioner of Education; Barbara Jacobson, LPS Director of Curriculum and Professional Development; David Smith, LPS Curriculum Specialist for Secondary Language Art; Ilka Oberst, OPS Supervisor for World Languages and Cultures; Patricia Schweer, OPS Principal, Crestridge International Studies Magnet; Robin Dexter, GIPS Assistant Superintendent of Student Services; David Engle, NPPS Superintendent; Margene Beatty, NPPS ESU Superintendent; Marjorie Kostelnik, Dean UNL College of Education and Human Sciences; Thomas McGowan, Professor UNL Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education.

Celebration of Taichi with Master Shuide Ding

April 3, 2010 - April 11, 2010 Sponsored by UNL Confucius Institute and Lincoln Taichi Association Shuide Ding, one of the "10 Best Martial Artists in 21st Century China," is a well-known master of the Yang style Taichi. He brought his artistry and more than forty years of teaching experience to the US for the very first time for students of all levels to share in his expertise in a series of classes and demonstrations.
