Fall 2017
Chinese Culture through Film and Literature

MODL 398/CHIN 303
Monday 5:30-8:20 pm
Instructor: Dr. Sijia Yao

This course will examine modern and contemporary Chinese culture through closely studying a selection of films and literary texts. Film and literature, as aesthetic responses to social, political, and historical transformations, garner rich cultural critique and anthropological energy. Each film or text, engaged in a larger topic, will be contextualized in
its specific historical time for students to better understand modern Chinese history, politics, philosophy, and social customs. This course emphasizes interactive discussion and comparative perspective.

THERE IS NO PREREQUISITE. NO PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE OF CHINESE LANGUAGE, CULTURE, OR HISTORY IS REQUIRED. THE COURSE IS OPEN TO ALL MAJORS.

This course is a full-credit course available to UNL students.

Note: The class is listed as CHIN 303, but no knowledge of Chinese is required for the course.
