2015 Chinese Speech Competition
In order to stimulate enthusiasm and interest for learning Chinese and to provide the learners of Chinese an opportunity to use the language, and to enhance understanding of the Chinese language and culture among students and others in Nebraska, a Chinese Speech Competition will be held by the Confucius Institute at UNL.  The competition will beld on Sunday, October 4th from 9am - 12pm in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center on the UNL City Campus.

Eligibility Guidelines
Contestants must be
--non-native Chinese speakers residing in Nebraska
--non-native Chinese speaking students in kindergarten, elementary, middle and high schools; college; and graduate schools
--people born in China Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan are not eligible to participate in the formal competition (see the note below) except Chinese children adopted by non-Chinese speaking American families.

Registration
Registration is from September 1-September 21. Registration can be done via email or by mail at the address below. Registration forms are available for download here. Contestants can also contact the office if help is needed.

Competition
In order to encourage fair competition, contestants will be divided into 4 groups according to their age and background.

A. Kindergarten/Elementary School students group B. Middle/High School students group
C. College/Graduate students group D. Adult residents in Nebraska

Note: If the number of registered contestants in a group is below three, this group will be combined with another group.

Contest
Each contestant will present a 3-5 minute prepared speech in Chinese followed by answering two questions from the judges. Each contestant can choose from one of the following topics for his/her speech.

Judging
Scores will be given after each contestant finishes his/her speech by 5 judges who are Chinese language instructors and/or native Chinese speakers. Contestants will be judged on the following categories: Voice (loudness/clarity), grammar (accuracy), fluency (no hesitations and pauses/speed), content (relevance/richness/appropriateness), and presentation (manner/attitude/connect to audience).

Awards
All contestants will be awarded a certificate and a souvenir.  All winners will be awarded a coupon for waiving one HSK exam fee held this fall or next spring. Top winners will also receive cash awards as listed in the following groups:

Group A Group B-C-D
One 1st Place Prize -- $100
Two 2nd Place Prizes -- $60 each
Three 3rd Place Prizes -- $30 each
One 1st Place Prize -- $200
Two 2nd Place Prizes -- $100 each
Three 3rd Place Prizes -- $50 each

Speech Performance for Native Chinese Speakers
If you are a native Chinese speaker born in China Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan, you are warmly welcome to participate in our Speech Performance by choosing any topic above. You can register by following the directions above. All contestants will be awarded a certificate and a souvenir.
